Travelling

What he said after the traveller had already left

The man never heard this part.

اللَّهُمَّ اطْوِ لَهُ الأَرْضَ وَهَوِّنْ عَلَيْهِ السَّفَرَ

Allāhumma-ṭwi lahu-l-arḍa wa hawwin ʿalayhi-s-safar

“O Allah, fold up the earth for him and make the journey easy on him.”

Where this comes from

A man said he was about to travel and asked for advice. He was told to hold to taqwā and say allāhu akbar at every rise in the road. Then he turned to go, and once his back was turned the Prophet said this after him.

The full narration

Abu Hurairah [may Allah be pleased with him] narrated that :a man said: “O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I intend to travel, so advise me.” He said, “Hold fast to the Taqwa of Allah, and (say the) Takbir upon every elevated place.” So when the man turned away he said: “O Allah make near for him the distance, and ease for him the journey (Allāhummaṭwi lahul-arḍa wa hawwin `alaihis-safar).”
