What he said at each end of the day
The evening version drops one word.
اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ النُّشُورُ
Allāhumma bika aṣbaḥnā wa bika amsaynā wa bika naḥyā wa bika namūt wa ilayka-n-nushūr
“O Allah, by You we enter the morning and by You we enter the evening, by You we live and by You we die, and to You is the rising.”
Where this comes from
Four things are put under the same preposition. Morning, evening, living, dying. In the evening he left out the word for morning, because it had already happened.
The full narration
Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to say in the morning: "O Allah, by Thee we come to the morning, by Thee we come to the evening, by Thee are we resurrected." In the evening he would say: "O Allah, by Thee we come to the evening, by Thee we die, and to Thee are we resurrected
