Losing someone

What he said as the body went down

Six words, said at the edge of the grave.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ

Bismi-Llāhi wa ʿalā sunnati rasūli-Llāh

“In the name of Allah, and upon the way of the Messenger of Allah.”

Where this comes from

Ibn ʿUmar reports it as what he said at the moment the body was placed in. Nothing about the person, nothing about the loss. Just the name it began under and the road it was walked on.

The full narration

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: When the Prophet (ﷺ) placed the dead in the grave, he said: In the name of Allah, and following the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). This is Muslim's version
