The greeting the Prophet ﷺ gave to those who had gone ahead.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ وَارْحَمْهُ وَعَافِهِ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ وَأَكْرِمْ نُزُلَهُ وَوَسِّعْ …
Praying over someone who has died
Asked for the one who can no longer ask for themselves.
لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ
When the news is bad
Said at the moment of distress, naming Allah three times over.

رَبِّ قِنِي عَذَابَكَ يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُ عِبَادَكَ
Placing your side down for the night
Said as he ﷺ went to his bed, with his hand beneath his cheek.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
As someone is laid in the grave
Said while placing the body down.
قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا …
When you cannot say it to anyone else
Yaʿqūb ﷺ, told he was grieving too openly, answered this.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَّصُوحًا عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ …
When you are afraid of how you will end
Said by the believers on the Day of Rising, as their light runs ahead of
وَلَا تُخْزِنِى يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى …
The only thing that will count
Ibrāhīm ﷺ asked not to be disgraced on the Day, then named what will act
أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ
Saying goodbye to someone leaving
The Prophet ﷺ would entrust three things about the traveller to Allah.
مَآ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَمَن يُؤْمِنۢ بِٱللَّهِ يَهْدِ …
When something happens that you cannot make sense of
What is promised to the one who believes when it lands on him.
وَٱلْعَصْرِ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَفِى خُسْرٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ …
What actually gets wasted
Three verses. Ash-Shāfiʿī said if people thought only about this sūrah i
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً …
What is said to a soul at the end

وَجَآءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِيصِهِۦ بِدَمٍ كَذِبٍ ۚ قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًا ۖ …
Patience without complaint to people
Yaʿqūb ﷺ, shown a shirt and told a lie, chose two words.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ ٱلْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلْأَرْحَامِ …
Five things nobody else has been given
A short list, and everything on it is something people try to predict.
فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ …
The one moment nothing can be done in
A scene described in the present tense, with everyone watching.
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا ۚ وَهُوَ …

On wishing someone came round more often
The Prophet ﷺ said it to Jibrīl, who had been away.
أَمَا إِنَّكُمْ سَتُعْرَضُونَ عَلَى رَبِّكُمْ فَتَرَوْنَهُ كَمَا تَرَوْنَ هَذَا الْقَمَرَ
A promise about seeing
Said on a night when the moon was full, and he pointed at it.
نَهْرٌ وَعَدَنِيهِ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ عَلَيْهِ حَوْضٌ
What he was given while they thought he slept
He raised his head smiling, and they asked what had made him smile.
سُبْحَانَكَ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ
What he said constantly near the end
Aisha noticed he had started repeating words she had not heard from him
إِنَّ الْعَيْنَ تَدْمَعُ، وَالْقَلْبَ يَحْزَنُ، وَلاَ نَقُولُ إِلاَّ مَا يَرْضَى رَبُّنَا …
Holding a child who is dying
He held his son Ibrāhīm as he died, and his eyes overflowed.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَشَأْ لاَ تُعْبَدْ فِي الأَرْضِ
Said on the worst day of his life
At Uḥud, with the dead around him and his own face bleeding.
مَنْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
The one condition attached to entering
ʿUthmān narrated it, and it is as short as it sounds.
كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۖ …
A sentence with no exceptions in it
Said in the middle of a passage about what is worth competing for.
يَـٰبَنِىَّ ٱذْهَبُوا۟ فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟ مِن رَّوْحِ …
When you have been waiting a very long time
Said by Yaʿqūb after decades, sending his sons back out to look again.
يَا فُلاَنُ بْنَ فُلاَنٍ، وَيَا فُلاَنُ بْنَ فُلاَنٍ، أَيَسُرُّكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ أَطَعْتُمُ …
Speaking to those who did not listen
After Badr he stood over the well where the bodies had been thrown.
قُولِي اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلَهُ وَأَعْقِبْنِي مِنْهُ عُقْبَى حَسَنَةً
What you say at a sickbed is being answered
Umm Salama was told why the words matter there in particular.
وَيَقُولُ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ رُوحٌ طَيِّبَةٌ جَاءَتْ مِنْ قِبَلِ الأَرْضِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ …
What happens at the moment of death
Two angels take it up, and the reception is described in detail.
وَمَا هَـٰذِهِ ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنْيَآ إِلَّا لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلدَّارَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ …
What the next life is called
A short clause naming which one is actually the living.
وَيُطْعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا إِنَّمَا …
Giving away food you wanted yourself
Three people are named as receiving it, and the reason given is one line
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَوْقَ كَثِيرٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ
Praying for someone's rank rather than their comfort
Said for a man who had just been killed, at his own request.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَاجْعَلْنِي مَعَ الرَّفِيقِ الأَعْلَى
What he said while Aisha held his hand
She was rubbing his hand with it while he was dying.
تَدْمَعُ الْعَيْنُ وَيَحْزَنُ الْقَلْبُ وَلاَ نَقُولُ إِلاَّ مَا يَرْضَى رَبُّنَا وَاللَّهِ …
Naming a newborn after someone you loved
A son was born to him and he named him after his own father.
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ دَارَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لاَحِقُونَ
Spoken to a whole cemetery at once
He addressed them as people of a dwelling, not as the dead.
إِنَّ إِخْوَانَكُمْ قَدْ قُتِلُوا وَإِنَّهُمْ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ بَلِّغْ عَنَّا نَبِيَّنَا …
Asked to be reported back to the living
Men killed at Bi'r Maʿūna sent a message before they died.
إِنَّ أَصْحَابَكُمْ قَدْ أُصِيبُوا، وَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ سَأَلُوا رَبَّهُمْ، فَقَالُوا رَبَّنَا …
What was sent back about them
A verse was revealed carrying their message, then withdrawn.
أَلَيْسَتْ نَفْسًا
On rising for a passing funeral
He stood for one, and was told whose it was.
أَنْ تَصَدَّقَ وَأَنْتَ صَحِيحٌ شَحِيحٌ، تَخْشَى الْفَقْرَ وَتَأْمُلُ الْغِنَى، وَلاَ تُمْهِلُ …
When giving is hardest
A man asked which charity is greatest, and the answer names a state.
اسْتَأْذَنْتُ رَبِّي أَنْ أَسْتَغْفِرَ لأُمِّي فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لِي وَاسْتَأْذَنْتُهُ أَنْ …
A request that was not granted
He asked twice, and got two different answers.
جَاءَ مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ إِلَى مُوسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ فَقَالَ لَهُ أَجِبْ رَبَّكَ - قَالَ - …
Asking to be brought a little closer first
Mūsā ﷺ made one request when the Angel of Death returned.
وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَن تَمُوتَ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ كِتَـٰبًا مُّؤَجَّلًا ۗ وَمَن يُرِدْ …
On being kept in your place until the end
A verse about not moving people before their time.
إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى
Where patience actually counts
Said to a woman crying at a grave who did not recognise him.
وَلَا تَدْعُ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۘ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ كُلُّ شَىْءٍ هَالِكٌ …
What is left of everything
A line of poetry he called the truest thing an Arab had said.
أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبُخْلِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَأَرْذَلِ الْعُمُرِ، وَعَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ، وَفِتْنَةِ …
Six things sought refuge from in one breath
They come in pairs, and the pairs are deliberate.
اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي شَهَادَةً فِي سَبِيلِكَ، وَاجْعَلْ مَوْتِي فِي بَلَدِ رَسُولِكَ
A prayer with two halves that seem to contradict
ʿUmar asked for two things that do not usually happen together.

Nothing is early and nothing is late
A statement about timing that removes both fear and hurry.

Speaking to the dead at the well of Badr
ʿUmar asked why he was addressing bodies.

A list of eight people you owe something to

The prayer Umm Salamah hated to say
Her husband had just died and she could not imagine anyone after him.

The two whose rights he warned about by name
He put it as a formal warning, not advice.

What he said standing over a man he had just prayed for
He put the man in Allah's protection first, then asked.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى سُنَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
What he said as the body went down
Six words, said at the edge of the grave.
فَتَقُولُ الأَرْضُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ رَبِّ هَذَا مَا اسْتَوْدَعْتَنِي
What the ground says about the person buried in it
