What he asked to be kept among
Abu Saʿid heard him say it and drew the obvious instruction from it.
اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مِسْكِينًا وَأَمِتْنِي مِسْكِينًا وَاحْشُرْنِي فِي زُمْرَةِ الْمَسَاكِينِ
Allāhumma aḥyinī miskīnan wa amitnī miskīnan wa-ḥshurnī fī zumrati-l-masākīn
“O Allah, let me live poor, let me die poor, and gather me in the company of the poor.”
Where this comes from
Abu Saʿid al-Khudri opened with an instruction of his own before quoting it: love the poor. Then he gave the reason, which is that the Prophet asked to be counted as one of them at all three points, living, dying and standing up again.
The full narration
It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri said:“Love the poor, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say in his supplication: ‘O Allah, cause me to live poor and cause me to die poor, and gather me among the poor (on the Day of Resurrection).’”
