When debt is crushing you
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib taught these words to a man who could not pay, words
اقْضِ عَنَّا الدَّيْنَ وَأَغْنِنَا مِنَ الْفَقْرِ
When provision is tight
The Prophet ﷺ taught these words to say at the end of the day.
مَنْ أَكَلَ طَعَامًا ثُمَّ قَالَ الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَطْعَمَنِي هَذَا الطَّعَامَ …
When you have eaten
Thanks offered for food, and an acknowledgement of who provided it.
إِذَا قَامَ أَحَدُكُمْ عَنْ فِرَاشِهِ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ إِلَيْهِ فَلْيَنْفُضْهُ بِصَنِفَةِ …
When you see someone suffering
Said quietly, not aloud, so as never to wound the one you are looking at
ُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
Leaving the masjid
On the way in you ask for mercy. On the way out, for provision.
فَإِذَا بَلَغْنَ أَجَلَهُنَّ فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ بِمَعْرُوفٍ أَوْ فَارِقُوهُنَّ بِمَعْرُوفٍ …
When there seems to be no way out
A promise attached to one condition, and to provision from a direction y
فَسَقَىٰ لَهُمَا ثُمَّ تَوَلَّىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلظِّلِّ فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى لِمَآ أَنزَلْتَ إِلَىَّ …
When you have nothing and no one
Mūsā ﷺ said this alone in Madyan, having fled with nothing, sitting in t
إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا …
Asking for blessing in what you are about to eat

Which way the need actually runs
A correction addressed to all people at once.
وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ
On the part of your money that is not yours
Described not as generosity but as an existing claim.
وَٱلَّذِينَ تَبَوَّءُو ٱلدَّارَ وَٱلْإِيمَـٰنَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ …
Giving when you have little yourself
Said of people who gave away what they themselves needed.
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لأَهْلِ الْمَدِينَةِ فِي مُدِّهِمْ
Asking for a place to be doubly blessed
He ﷺ asked for twice what Ibrāhīm had asked for Makkah.
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، وَأَنِّي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
When there is not enough to go round
Their provisions had run out and they asked permission to slaughter thei
قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَارْزُقْنِي
A man asked how he should beg his Lord
He wanted the actual words, and was given four.
بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ، أَوْلِمْ وَلَوْ بِشَاةٍ
When you get married, feed people
He saw the traces of perfume on ʿAbd al-Raḥmān and worked out what had h
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ الْعَيْشَ عَيْشُ الآخِرَةِ
Said while digging a trench with them
They were singing a line as they dug, and he answered it with his own.
لاَ تُقْبَلُ صَلاَةٌ بِغَيْرِ طُهُورٍ وَلاَ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ غُلُولٍ
Two things that are never accepted
Stated as a pair, and the second one is about money.
مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ يُنفِقُونَ أَمْوَٰلَهُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنۢبَتَتْ …
A picture of what giving does
One seed, seven ears, a hundred grains in each.
قَالَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ أَنْفِقْ أُنْفِقْ عَلَيْكَ
An offer made in the first person
Allah addresses the son of Adam directly, in two words.
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِي مِكْيَالِهِمْ وَصَاعِهِمْ وَمُدِّهِمْ
Praying over a community's livelihood
Said for the people of a whole city, in the units they trade in.
مَّن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يُقْرِضُ ٱللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَـٰعِفَهُۥ لَهُۥٓ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً …
The word used for giving
It is not called a gift. It is called a loan.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ ضِعْفَىْ مَا بِمَكَّةَ مِنَ الْبَرَكَةِ
Asking for more than had been asked before
Ibrāhīm had asked for Makkah. He asked for twice that.
الْكَمْأَةُ مِنَ الْمَنِّ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى عَلَى بَنِي …
Something ordinary described as a gift
A desert fungus, named alongside what was sent to Banū Isrā'īl.
احْتَجَّتِ النَّارُ وَالْجَنَّةُ فَقَالَتْ هَذِهِ يَدْخُلُنِي الْجَبَّارُونَ …
An argument between two places
Each claimed something about who it gets.
وَيُطْعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا إِنَّمَا …
Giving away food you wanted yourself
Three people are named as receiving it, and the reason given is one line
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ خَيْرَ إِلاَّ خَيْرُ الآخِرَهْ فَاغْفِرْ لِلأَنْصَارِ وَالْمُهَاجِرَهْ
Said while digging, hungry, in the cold
They were on the trench and had tied stones to their stomachs.

On eating and spending

Cold morning, empty stomachs, and a trench to finish.

The cheapest good deed named
Listed alongside removing something from a road.
لاَ تَحْقِرَنَّ مِنَ الْمَعْرُوفِ شَيْئًا وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ بِوَجْهٍ طَلْقٍ
Do not belittle any good thing
And the example given is deliberately small.
لَيْسَ الْغِنَى عَنْ كَثْرَةِ الْعَرَضِ، وَلَكِنَّ الْغِنَى غِنَى النَّفْسِ
What being rich actually means
A correction about where wealth is located.
مَا مِنْ يَوْمٍ يُصْبِحُ الْعِبَادُ فِيهِ إِلاَّ مَلَكَانِ يَنْزِلاَنِ فَيَقُولُ أَحَدُهُمَا …
Two angels who ask opposite things each morning
One prays for the giver, the other for the withholder.
إِن تُبْدُوا۟ ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِىَ ۖ وَإِن تُخْفُوهَا وَتُؤْتُوهَا ٱلْفُقَرَآءَ …
Charity given so quietly the giver forgets
One of the seven, described by how well it is concealed.

Said after finishing a meal
Three words describing the praise itself rather than the food.

Abu Saʿid heard him say it and drew the obvious instruction from it.

It refuses to say goodbye to the thing it is thanking for.

What he said after every obligatory prayer
Al-Mughirah dictated it into a letter so it would not be lost.
