يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ تَفَرَّغْ لِعِبَادَتِي أَمْلأْ صَدْرَكَ غِنًى وَأَسُدَّ فَقْرَكَ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ مَلأْتُ صَدْرَكَ شُغْلاً وَلَمْ أَسُدَّ فَقْرَكَ
Yā-bna Ādam, tafarragh li-ʿibādatī amlaʾ ṣadraka ghinan wa asudda faqrak. Wa in lam tafʿal malaʾtu ṣadraka shughlan wa lam asudda faqrak
“Son of Adam, make yourself free for My worship and I will fill your chest with sufficiency and close up your poverty. And if you do not, I will fill your chest with occupation and I will not close up your poverty.”
Where this comes from
Both outcomes fill the same chest. The only question is with what. Ghinā here is not money. It is the feeling of having enough, which is why the alternative to it is busyness rather than debt.
The full narration
(Abu) Khalid Al-Walibi narrated from Abu Hurairah and he (one of the narrators) said:“I do not know except that he attributed it to the Prophet (ﷺ)” – “Allah says: ‘O son of Adam, devote yourself to My worship, and I will fill your heart with contentment and take care of your poverty; but if you do not do that, then I will fill your heart with worldly concerns and will not take care of your poverty.’”
