Said quietly, not aloud, so as never to wound the one you are looking at

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِي مَا رَزَقْتَهُمْ وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَارْحَمْهُمْ

Thanking someone who fed you

The guest's prayer for the one who opened their home.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ Muslim 5328

اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا

When the land is dry and you need rain

Said three times over, plainly, when the people came asking.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1014

إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ طَعَامًا فَلْيَقُلِ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَأَطْعِمْنَا …

Asking for blessing in what you are about to eat

Said over food, asking not for more of it but for good in it.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

The four things worth asking for

Asking for a place to be doubly blessed

He ﷺ asked for twice what Ibrāhīm had asked for Makkah.

نَهْرٌ وَعَدَنِيهِ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ عَلَيْهِ حَوْضٌ

What he was given while they thought he slept

He raised his head smiling, and they asked what had made him smile.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ Muslim 895

آيِبُونَ تَائِبُونَ، عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا، حَامِدُونَ

Coming back from a journey

Said on the way home, four words in sequence.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5968

سُبْحَانَكَ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

What he said constantly near the end

Two things that are never accepted

Stated as a pair, and the second one is about money.

Where wealth and children actually sit

Named as adornment, and then set against something else.

A list of what success is made of

It opens with a claim and then itemises it.

Qur'anQur'an 23:1-5

ثُمَّ يَبْسُطُ يَدَيْهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى يَقُولُ مَنْ يُقْرِضُ غَيْرَ عَدُومٍ وَلاَ ظَلُومٍ

A call made every night while people sleep

Allah descends and asks a question, and it is phrased as a loan.

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ طُوبَىٰ لَهُمْ وَحُسْنُ مَـَٔابٍ

A word given to those who believed and did well

وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا …

The instruction given to everyone at once

A verse that assumes everybody has something to turn back from.

An observation, not a command

Said at the end of a passage about everything given to Sulaymān.

أَتَانِي اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي فَقَالَ صَلِّ فِي هَذَا الْوَادِي الْمُبَارَكِ وَقُلْ …

A message about where to pray

ʿUmar heard him describing what he had been told that night.

أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ وَإِنَّ أُمَّتِي لاَ تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ

What he asked for instead of what he was offered

Jibrīl brought him a choice about how the Qur'an would be recited.

Two situations people misread

Being given much and being given little are both misinterpreted.

يَخْرُجُ مِنَ النَّارِ أَرْبَعَةٌ فَيُعْرَضُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَيَلْتَفِتُ أَحَدُهُمْ …

Asked by someone who has just been taken out of the Fire

Four are brought out, and one of them turns back to speak.

On waking and finding you are still here

They were digging and he saw what it was costing them.

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَيْهِمْ بِسَبْعٍ كَسَبْعِ يُوسُفَ

Praying against people, and then relenting

He asked for a famine like the one in Yūsuf's time, and it came.

سُبْحَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي

What he did once it was all over
