A prophet wiping blood off his face
Ibn Masʿud said he could still picture him telling it.
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِقَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Rabbi-ghfir li-qawmī fa-innahum lā yaʿlamūn
“My Lord, forgive my people, for they do not know.”
Where this comes from
He was describing an earlier prophet whose own people had beaten him. Ibn Masʿud says it was as if he could see the Messenger of Allah doing it, the hand moving over the face, the blood coming away, and the sentence being said while it was still happening.
The full narration
It has been narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah who said:It appeared to me as if I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (and heard him) relate the story of a Prophet who had been beaten by his people, was wiping the blood from his face and was saying. My Lord, forgive my people, for they do not know
