When someone you love is ill
Said seven times at the side of one who is sick.
وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَٰجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ …
When you long for a family
The prayer of the servants of the Most Merciful.
رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ …
For everyone under your roof
Nūḥ ﷺ asked not only for himself, but for whoever entered his house beli
رَبَّنَا ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلْحِسَابُ
For your parents
Ibrāhīm ﷺ asked for his parents even after everything between them.
إِذْ أَوَى ٱلْفِتْيَةُ إِلَى ٱلْكَهْفِ فَقَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ ءَاتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً …
When you have had to walk away from everything
Said by young men who left their homes rather than give up what they bel
وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ إِحْسَـٰنًا ۖ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ …
When you realise how much you were given
Asked by the one who has reached maturity and looks back at their parent
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ أُمَّ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ
For someone you love who has turned away
Abū Hurayrah asked the Prophet ﷺ to pray for his mother. He did, and by
وَٱخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ ٱلذُّلِّ مِنَ ٱلرَّحْمَةِ وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا …

اللَّهُمَّ أَحْبِبْهُ وَأَحِبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّهُ

For yourself and for who comes after you

After a falling out with family

When you are frightened about money

On wishing someone came round more often
The Prophet ﷺ said it to Jibrīl, who had been away.
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتُمْ مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ
Telling people plainly that you love them
He stood up and said it three times to a group of women and children.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلأَنْصَارِ وَلأَبْنَاءِ الأَنْصَارِ
Praying for people who are not born yet
He asked for the Anṣār, and then did not stop there.
اللَّهُمَّ أَحِبَّهُمَا فَإِنِّي أُحِبُّهُمَا
Asking Allah to love who you love
Said with Usāma on one side and Ḥasan on the other.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ أَتْبَاعَهُمْ مِنْهُمْ
Asking for people who only follow
The Anṣār said every nation has followers, and asked to be counted with
۞ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْعَدْلِ وَٱلْإِحْسَـٰنِ وَإِيتَآئِ ذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَيَنْهَىٰ …
Three commanded and three forbidden
Called the most comprehensive verse in the Qur'an about conduct.
وَٱعْتَصِمُوا۟ بِحَبْلِ ٱللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا۟ ۚ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ نِعْمَتَ ٱللَّهِ …
When a community is coming apart
A command about holding, and about not letting go separately.
أَىْ عَمِّ قُلْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ. أُحَاجُّ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ
At the bedside of someone refusing
He asked his dying uncle for one sentence, and offered to argue his case
۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ كُونُوا۟ قَوَّٰمِينَ بِٱلْقِسْطِ شُهَدَآءَ لِلَّهِ …
Standing for fairness when it costs you
The verse names exactly who you might be tempted to protect.
ٱلْمَالُ وَٱلْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ وَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ …
Where wealth and children actually sit
Named as adornment, and then set against something else.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُحِبُّهُ فَأَحِبَّهُ وَأَحْبِبْ مَنْ يُحِبُّهُ
Asking for love to spread outward
Said about Ḥasan, and it does not stop with him.
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ يَا أُمَّ الرَّبِيعِ الْقِصَاصُ كِتَابُ اللَّهِ
People whose word Allah honours
A woman broke a girl's tooth, and the family demanded retaliation.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ عَن …
A warning aimed at a specific distraction
It names two things, and children is the second.
وَقُل لِّعِبَادِى يَقُولُوا۟ ٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ يَنزَغُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ …
A reason given for choosing your words
The verse explains what happens if you do not.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُم مِّن نَّفْسٍ وَٰحِدَةٍ وَخَلَقَ …
Family ties named beside God-consciousness
The opening verse of a sūrah about family and rights.
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، مَاذَا أُنْزِلَ مِنَ الْخَزَائِنِ وَمَاذَا أُنْزِلَ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ
Woken by something he had been shown
Umm Salama heard him get up in the night saying it.
تَدْمَعُ الْعَيْنُ وَيَحْزَنُ الْقَلْبُ وَلاَ نَقُولُ إِلاَّ مَا يَرْضَى رَبُّنَا وَاللَّهِ …
Naming a newborn after someone you loved
A son was born to him and he named him after his own father.
فَقُولَا لَهُۥ قَوْلًا لَّيِّنًا لَّعَلَّهُۥ يَتَذَكَّرُ أَوْ يَخْشَىٰ
Sent to the worst tyrant with an instruction about tone
Mūsā and Hārūn were told how to speak before they were told what to say.
خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِهِ وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِي وَإِذَا مَاتَ صَاحِبُكُمْ فَدَعُوهُ
A measure given for who is best
It is not about worship.
لا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لأَخِيهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ
A condition placed on belief itself
Short, and phrased as an exclusion.
يَا عَمِّ، قُلْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، كَلِمَةً أَشْهَدُ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ
One sentence asked for at the very end
A second narration of his uncle's deathbed, with different wording.
السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ دَارَ قَوْمٍ مُؤْمِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ بِكُمْ لاَحِقُونَ
Spoken to a whole cemetery at once
He addressed them as people of a dwelling, not as the dead.
اللَّهُمَّ كَانَ لِي أَبَوَانِ شَيْخَانِ كَبِيرَانِ فَكُنْتُ لاَ أَغْبُقُ قَبْلَهُمَا أَهْلاً …
Three men sealed in by a rock
Each asked to be released by one deed nobody had seen.
اسْتَأْذَنْتُ رَبِّي أَنْ أَسْتَغْفِرَ لأُمِّي فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لِي وَاسْتَأْذَنْتُهُ أَنْ …
A request that was not granted
He asked twice, and got two different answers.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ذَنْبَهُ وَأَدْخِلْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ …
Praying for someone by their full name
Said for Abū Mūsā, and he asked to be present when it was said.
يَلْقَى إِبْرَاهِيمُ أَبَاهُ فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّكَ وَعَدْتَنِي أَنْ لاَ تُخْزِنِي يَوْمَ …
A promise he had been given, and a moment it seems to fail
Ibrāhīm ﷺ meets his father on the Day and reminds Allah of a promise.

Standing at his mother's grave
He wept and everyone around him wept.
اللَّهُمَّ أُمِّي وَصَلاَتِي
A man who chose his prayer over his mother
She called three times while he was praying, and he did not answer.
اللَّهُمَّ أَمْتِعْنِي بِزَوْجِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَبِأَبِي أَبِي سُفْيَانَ …
Umm Ḥabība asking for more time with her family
She asked for a long life with her husband, father and brother.
فَٱعْبُدُوا۟ مَا شِئْتُم مِّن دُونِهِۦ ۗ قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ ٱلَّذِينَ خَسِرُوٓا۟ …
What real loss is defined as
Not money, not health, not reputation.
اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ الْمَلأَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ أَبَا جَهْلِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ، وَعُتْبَةَ بْنَ …

Taught to children the way a sūrah is taught
Ibn ʿAbbās said he taught it to them exactly as he taught the Qur'an.
۞ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُشْرِكُوا۟ بِهِۦ شَيْـًٔا ۖ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَـٰنًا …
A list of eight people you owe something to
It moves outward from parents to the person standing next to you.
اللَّهُمَّ أَذَقْتَ أَوَّلَ قُرَيْشٍ نَكَالاً فَأَذِقْ آخِرَهُمْ نَوَالاً
A prayer for the descendants of his enemies
The first of them had already been dealt with.
لَيْسَ بِالْكَاذِبِ مَنْ أَصْلَحَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ خَيْرًا أَوْ نَمَى خَيْرًا
The one case where saying more than you know is not lying
Narrated by a woman through her son.
لاَ يَكُونُ لِمُسْلِمٍ أَنْ يَهْجُرَ مُسْلِمًا فَوْقَ ثَلاَثَةٍ فَإِذَا لَقِيَهُ سَلَّمَ …
The limit on not speaking to someone
And who carries the sin once it goes past that.
اللَّهُمَّ هَؤُلاَءِ أَهْلُ بَيْتِي فَأَذْهِبْ عَنْهُمُ الرِّجْسَ وَطَهِّرْهُمْ تَطْهِيرًا
What he said after gathering them under a cloak
Umar ibn Abi Salamah was in the house and saw it.
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِقَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ
A prophet wiping blood off his face
