What he said on the road back from the farewell pilgrimage
He called them to gather and prayed first.
اللَّهُمَّ وَالِ مَنْ وَالاَهُ اللَّهُمَّ عَادِ مَنْ عَادَاهُ
Allāhumma wāli man wālāh, Allāhumma ʿādi man ʿādāh
“O Allah, be close to whoever is close to him. O Allah, oppose whoever opposes him.”
Where this comes from
Al-Bara says they stopped on the road, prayer was called in congregation, and then he took Ali by the hand. Am I not closer to the believers than they are to themselves. They said yes. He asked again. They said yes. Then he said: whoever I am close to, this man is close to him, and prayed these two lines.
The full narration
It was narrated that Bara' bin 'Azib said:"We returned with the Messenger of Allah from his Hajj that he had performed, and we stopped at some point on the road. He commanded that prayer should be performed in congregation, then he took the hand of 'Ali and said: 'Am I not dearer to the believers than their own selves?' They said: 'Yes indeed.' He said: 'Am I not dearer to every believer than his own self?' They said: 'Yes indeed.' He said: 'This man is the friend of those whose master I am.' O Allah, take as friends those who take him as a friend, and take as enemies those who take him as an enemy
