Why he called Muadh a man who drives people away
A man walked out of the prayer and prayed alone.
أَفَتَّانٌ يَا مُعَاذُ أَفَتَّانٌ يَا مُعَاذُ
A-fattānun yā Muʿādh, a-fattānun yā Muʿādh
Are you one who drives people to hardship, Muadh? Are you one who drives people to hardship, Muadh?
Where this comes from
Muadh started al-Baqarah in the maghrib prayer. A man with two watering camels behind him left, prayed on his own and went home. When it reached the Prophet he said this twice, then named the surahs Muadh should have used instead. Sabbiḥisma rabbika-l-aʿlā. Wa-sh-shamsi wa ḍuḥāhā.
The full narration
It was narrated that Jabir said:"A man from among the Ansar passed Mu'adh leading two camels, when he (Mu'adh) was praying maghrib, and he was starting to recite Al-Baqarah. So that man prayed then went away. News of that reached the Prophet (ﷺ) and he said: 'Do you want to cause hardship to the people, O Mu'adh; do you want to cause hardship to the people, O Mu'adh? Why don't you recite: 'Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High' and 'By the sun and its brightness' and the like?
