When you have been told you amount to nothing
Revealed after his son died and an enemy said his line was finished.
Innā aʿṭaynāka-l-kawthar, fa-ṣalli li-rabbika wa-nḥar, inna shāni'aka huwa-l-abtar.
“Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muḥammad], al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and offer sacrifice [to Him alone]. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.1”
Where this comes from
The man who said it meant that with no surviving son, the Prophet ﷺ would be forgotten. The shortest sūrah in the Qur'an answers by reversing the insult onto the one who made it.
