When you want to protect your children

Asking for a righteous child
Ibrāhīm ﷺ asked in these words, and was answered.
وَوَصَّيْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ إِحْسَـٰنًا ۖ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ …
When you realise how much you were given
Asked by the one who has reached maturity and looks back at their parent
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ أُمَّ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ
For someone you love who has turned away
Abū Hurayrah asked the Prophet ﷺ to pray for his mother. He did, and by
وَزَكَرِيَّآ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥ رَبِّ لَا تَذَرْنِى فَرْدًا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ ٱلْوَٰرِثِينَ
When you are afraid of being left with no one
Zakariyyā ﷺ, old and without a child, asking not to be left alone.
اللَّهُمَّ أَحْبِبْهُ وَأَحِبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّهُ
Asking for someone to be loved
The Prophet ﷺ said this holding his grandson, and asked for love not onl
وَلَا تُخْزِنِى يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى …
The only thing that will count
Ibrāhīm ﷺ asked not to be disgraced on the Day, then named what will act
رَبَّنَا وَٱجْعَلْنَا مُسْلِمَيْنِ لَكَ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِنَآ أُمَّةً مُّسْلِمَةً لَّكَ …
For yourself and for who comes after you
Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl ﷺ, still at the foundations, asking about their desc
إِذْ قَالَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُ عِمْرَٰنَ رَبِّ إِنِّى نَذَرْتُ لَكَ مَا فِى بَطْنِى مُحَرَّرًا …
Before a child is even born
The wife of ʿImrān promised what was in her womb, then found it was not
إِنَّآ أَعْطَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْكَوْثَرَ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَٱنْحَرْ إِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ ٱلْأَبْتَرُ
When you have been told you amount to nothing
Revealed after his son died and an enemy said his line was finished.
يَـٰبُنَىَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱنْهَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱصْبِرْ …
A father's advice to his son
Prayer, then enjoining good, then patience over what comes of it.
إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُۥٓ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْـًٔا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ
When what you are asking for looks impossible
How anything happens, according to the Qur'an.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ ٱلْغَيْثَ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا فِى ٱلْأَرْحَامِ …
Five things nobody else has been given

When you think you could never learn it

A command about the people in your house
Yourself first, then them.
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ …
The answer to who He is
They asked him ﷺ to describe his Lord's lineage. Four verses came down.
اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْهُمَا فَإِنِّي أَرْحَمُهُمَا
With a child on each knee
Usāma sat on one thigh and Ḥasan on the other, and he ﷺ held them both.
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتُمْ مِنْ أَحَبِّ النَّاسِ إِلَىَّ
Telling people plainly that you love them
He stood up and said it three times to a group of women and children.
إِنَّ الْعَيْنَ تَدْمَعُ، وَالْقَلْبَ يَحْزَنُ، وَلاَ نَقُولُ إِلاَّ مَا يَرْضَى رَبُّنَا …
Holding a child who is dying
He held his son Ibrāhīm as he died, and his eyes overflowed.
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ …
The words called out five times a day
Taught word by word to Abū Maḥdhūrah, whose voice he ﷺ had liked.

When you cannot pray the way you normally would

On leading people for longer than they can take
Muʿādh led a long night prayer and a man left and prayed alone.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تُلْهِكُمْ أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ وَلَآ أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ عَن …
A warning aimed at a specific distraction

Umm Qays heard him name it and what it treats.
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ عَيْشَ إِلاَّ عَيْشُ الآخِرَة، فَأَصْلِحِ الأَنْصَارَ وَالْمُهَاجِرَة
Said while everyone around him was digging
Cold morning, empty stomachs, and a trench to finish.
تَدْمَعُ الْعَيْنُ وَيَحْزَنُ الْقَلْبُ وَلاَ نَقُولُ إِلاَّ مَا يَرْضَى رَبُّنَا وَاللَّهِ …
Naming a newborn after someone you loved
A son was born to him and he named him after his own father.
فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ ٱلْقَلْبِ …
On why people stayed around him
A verse that names the reason, and warns what would have happened otherw
خَيْرُكُمْ خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِهِ وَأَنَا خَيْرُكُمْ لأَهْلِي وَإِذَا مَاتَ صَاحِبُكُمْ فَدَعُوهُ
A measure given for who is best
It is not about worship.
يَسِّرُوا وَلاَ تُعَسِّرُوا، وَبَشِّرُوا وَلاَ تُنَفِّرُوا
Making things easy rather than hard
Said to two men being sent out to teach.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ الْخَيْرَ خَيْرُ الآخِرَهْ فَاغْفِرْ لِلأَنْصَارِ وَالْمُهَاجِرَهْ
Praying for people who were doing the work
They were digging and he saw what it was costing them.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا. بِرِيقَةِ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا
A small ritual for someone in pain
He would touch the ground, then touch the place that hurt.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّهُ لاَ خَيْرَ إِلاَّ خَيْرُ الآخِرَهْ، فَبَارِكْ فِي الأَنْصَارِ …
On the trench, carrying earth on their backs
He saw what they were doing and said it out loud.
عَلَى مَا تَدْغَرْنَ أَوْلاَدَكُنَّ بِهَذَا الْعِلاَقِ عَلَيْكُنَّ بِهَذَا الْعُودِ …
A mother pressing her child's throat
Umm Qays had done it herself and was corrected.
اللَّهُمَّ كَانَ لِي أَبَوَانِ شَيْخَانِ كَبِيرَانِ فَكُنْتُ لاَ أَغْبُقُ قَبْلَهُمَا أَهْلاً …
Three men sealed in by a rock
Each asked to be released by one deed nobody had seen.
بِاسْمِ اللَّهِ تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا بِرِيقَةِ بَعْضِنَا لِيُشْفَى بِهِ سَقِيمُنَا بِإِذْنِ …
Wiping an injury with earth and saliva
Aisha described it for anything, illness or wound.
فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًا يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم …
Nūḥ's method, and what he promised would follow

Gentleness is described as adorning whatever it enters.

Said before intimacy, and what it protects
