What Abu Bakr asked to be given
He wanted something fixed to say at both ends of the day.
اللَّهُمَّ فَاطِرَ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ رَبَّ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ وَمَلِيكَهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ نَفْسِي وَشَرِّ الشَّيْطَانِ وَشِرْكِهِ
Allāhumma fāṭira-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, ʿālima-l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahādah, rabba kulli shayʾin wa malīkah, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā ant, aʿūdhu bika min sharri nafsī wa sharri-sh-shayṭāni wa shirkih
“O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Lord of everything and its Owner. I testify there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of myself and from the evil of Satan and his idolatry.”
Where this comes from
Abu Bakr asked for words to say morning and evening. He was given these, and then told to say them at a third time as well, when he lay down. The first thing refuge is sought from is not Satan. It is himself.
The full narration
Narrated AbuHurayrah: AbuBakr as-Siddiq said: Messenger of Allah! command me something to say in the morning and in the evening. He said: Say "O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who knowest the unseen and the seen, Lord and Possessor of everything. I testify that there is no god but Thee; I seek refuge in Thee from the evil within myself, from the evil of the devil, and his (incitement to) attributing partners (to Allah)." He said: Say this in the morning
