Anxiety & worry

Eight things, paired off

Anas says he used to say it a great deal.

Aʿūdhu bika mina-l-harami wa-l-ḥuzni wa-l-ʿajzi wa-l-kasali wa-l-bukhli wa-l-jubni wa ḍalaʿi-d-dayni wa ghalabati-r-rijāl

“I seek refuge in You from decrepitude and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, from the weight of debt and from being overpowered by men.”

Where this comes from

They go in twos, and each pair puts something you cannot help beside something you can. Old age with sorrow. Not being able with not bothering. Holding onto money with not being brave. Debt with being pushed around.

The full narration

Anas bin Malik said:"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said to Abu Talhah: 'Find me one of your boys to serve me.' Abu Talhah brought me out, riding behind him, and I served the Prophet [SAW] every time he stopped (on his journey). And I often heard him say: 'Allahumma, inni a'udhu bika min al-harami, wal-huzni, wal-'ajzi, wal-kasali, wal-bukhli, wal-jubni, wa dala'id-dain, wa ghalabatir-rijal (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from old age, grief, incapacity, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, the burden of debt and being overpowered by men)
