When your faith feels unsteady
The Prophet ﷺ said this often, and when asked why, said hearts are betwe
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ …
When your heart will not settle
Where restlessness actually ends, according to the Qur'an.
إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْ عِبَادِى يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَآ ءَامَنَّا فَٱغْفِرْ لَنَا …
A short one, when you cannot manage more

When you are given something and it still is not enough
Ayyūb ﷺ was asked whether he had had enough. This was the answer.
أَلَمْ نَشْرَحْ لَكَ صَدْرَكَ وَوَضَعْنَا عَنكَ وِزْرَكَ ٱلَّذِىٓ أَنقَضَ ظَهْرَكَ وَرَفَعْنَا …
When you are asked to carry more than you were
Revealed to the Prophet ﷺ in the years when the weight of it was heavies
وَلَا تُخْزِنِى يَوْمَ يُبْعَثُونَ يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلَا بَنُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى …
The only thing that will count
Ibrāhīm ﷺ asked not to be disgraced on the Day, then named what will act
وَنُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلْقُرْءَانِ مَا هُوَ شِفَآءٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۙ وَلَا يَزِيدُ …
When you need something to hold on to
What the Qur'an says it is for.

Three words, when that is all you have

When you just want it to stop
Said by a people under a punishment they could no longer bear.
وَٱلضُّحَىٰ وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا سَجَىٰ مَا وَدَّعَكَ رَبُّكَ وَمَا قَلَىٰ وَلَلْـَٔاخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ …
When it has gone quiet and you think you were dropped
Revealed after revelation paused, and people said he had been abandoned.
إِلَّا تَنصُرُوهُ فَقَدْ نَصَرَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِذْ أَخْرَجَهُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ثَانِىَ …
Two men in a cave with an army outside
Abū Bakr could see the feet of the men searching. This is what he was to
يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً …
What is said to a soul at the end
The address given to the one whose heart had settled.
أَلَآ إِنَّ أَوْلِيَآءَ ٱللَّهِ لَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ …
On fear and grief, and who is exempt

وَمَنْ أَعْرَضَ عَن ذِكْرِى فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ مَعِيشَةً ضَنكًا وَنَحْشُرُهُۥ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ …
When you have everything and still feel hollow

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، إِنَّ لِلْمَوْتِ سَكَرَاتٍ
What he ﷺ said while dying
Aisha watched him dipping his hand in water and wiping his face.
نَهْرٌ وَعَدَنِيهِ رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي الْجَنَّةِ عَلَيْهِ حَوْضٌ
What he was given while they thought he slept
He raised his head smiling, and they asked what had made him smile.
إِنَّ الْعَيْنَ تَدْمَعُ، وَالْقَلْبَ يَحْزَنُ، وَلاَ نَقُولُ إِلاَّ مَا يَرْضَى رَبُّنَا …
Holding a child who is dying
He held his son Ibrāhīm as he died, and his eyes overflowed.
اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا اللَّهُمَّ اشْفِ سَعْدًا
Sitting with someone frightened of dying
Saʿd wept when he ﷺ visited him during his illness in Makkah.
لاَ يَنْفَعُهُ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَقُلْ يَوْمًا رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطِيئَتِي يَوْمَ الدِّينِ
When someone good has died outside faith
Aisha asked about a man known for feeding the poor and keeping family ti
كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۖ …
A sentence with no exceptions in it

When you have stopped being affected by anything
A description of hearts that hardened after having been given the truth.
قُولِي اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَلَهُ وَأَعْقِبْنِي مِنْهُ عُقْبَى حَسَنَةً
What you say at a sickbed is being answered
Umm Salama was told why the words matter there in particular.
فَيَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَعْطَيْتَنَا مَا لَمْ تُعْطِ أَحَدًا مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ
Said by people who have already been given everything
They are asked whether they want more, and they cannot think what.
إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ …
A description of what belief does physically
Three signs listed, and the first is involuntary.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوا۟ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا …
Saying it is the easy half
Two clauses, and the second is where the work is.
لِّلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَإِن تُبْدُوا۟ مَا فِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ …
On the parts of yourself you keep back
A verse that covers the inside as well as the outside.
لَا يُكَلِّفُ ٱللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ لَهَا مَا كَسَبَتْ وَعَلَيْهَا مَا …
The verse that came to lighten the one before it
They said they could not bear it, and were answered.
وَيَقُولُ أَهْلُ السَّمَاءِ رُوحٌ طَيِّبَةٌ جَاءَتْ مِنْ قِبَلِ الأَرْضِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ …
What happens at the moment of death
Two angels take it up, and the reception is described in detail.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَوْقَ كَثِيرٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ

A prayer said after a bad turn
Said in the qunūt for a month, then stopped.
سَبْعَةٌ يُظِلُّهُمُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي ظِلِّهِ يَوْمَ لاَ ظِلَّ إِلاَّ ظِلُّهُ إِمَامٌ …
Seven kinds of people under shade
A list of who is sheltered on a day with no other shelter.
يَا عَمِّ، قُلْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ، كَلِمَةً أَشْهَدُ لَكَ بِهَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ
One sentence asked for at the very end
A second narration of his uncle's deathbed, with different wording.
إِنَّ إِخْوَانَكُمْ قَدْ قُتِلُوا وَإِنَّهُمْ قَالُوا اللَّهُمَّ بَلِّغْ عَنَّا نَبِيَّنَا …
Asked to be reported back to the living
Men killed at Bi'r Maʿūna sent a message before they died.

What was sent back about them
A verse was revealed carrying their message, then withdrawn.
لاَ يَتَمَنَّيَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ الْمَوْتَ مِنْ ضُرٍّ أَصَابَهُ، فَإِنْ كَانَ لاَ بُدَّ فَاعِلاً …
When you want it to be over
A prohibition, then a way to phrase it that is allowed.
اسْتَأْذَنْتُ رَبِّي أَنْ أَسْتَغْفِرَ لأُمِّي فَلَمْ يَأْذَنْ لِي وَاسْتَأْذَنْتُهُ أَنْ …
A request that was not granted

The prayer Umm Salamah hated to say
Her husband had just died and she could not imagine anyone after him.
