Seeking refuge in Him from Him
Aisha found him in prostration in the dark and heard this.
اللَّهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْكَ لاَ أُحْصِي ثَنَاءً عَلَيْكَ أَنْتَ كَمَا أَثْنَيْتَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ
Allāhumma aʿūdhu bi-riḍāka min sakhaṭik, wa bi-muʿāfātika min ʿuqūbatik, wa aʿūdhu bika mink. Lā uḥṣī thanā'an ʿalayk, anta kamā athnayta ʿalā nafsik.
“O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot enumerate praise of You; You are as You have praised Yourself.”
There is nowhere else to run to, so the running is towards Him.
The full narration
A'isha reported:One night I missed Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) from the bed, and when I sought him my hand touched the soles of his feet while he was in the state of prostration; they (feet) were raised and he was saying:" O Allah, I seek refuge in Thy pleasure from Thy anger, and in Thy forgiveness from Thy punishment, and I seek refuge in Thee from Thee (Thy anger). I cannot reckon Thy praise. Thou art as Thou hast lauded Thyself
