Stepping into the masjid
Said on entering, asking for the doors of mercy.
مَنْ قَالَ حِينَ يَسْمَعُ النِّدَاءَ اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ …
When the adhān has finished
Whoever says this after hearing the call will have the Prophet's ﷺ inter
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلاَ إِلَهَ …
Opening the prayer
The first words after the opening takbīr.
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطِيئَتِي وَجَهْلِي وَإِسْرَافِي فِي أَمْرِي كُلِّهِ، وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ …
Sitting between the two prostrations
The shortest request, made twice in every unit of prayer.
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ السَّلاَمُ وَمِنْكَ السَّلاَمُ تَبَارَكْتَ ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ
When the prayer ends
The Prophet ﷺ would say this immediately after giving salām.
ُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
Leaving the masjid
On the way in you ask for mercy. On the way out, for provision.
أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْعَبْدُ مِنْ رَبِّهِ وَهُوَ سَاجِدٌ فَأَكْثِرُوا الدُّعَاءَ
The place you are nearest to Him
The Prophet ﷺ named the exact posture in which a servant is closest to h
سُبْحَانَكَ رَبِّي وَبِحَمْدِكَ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي
What he ﷺ said in bowing and prostration
Aisha said he would say this often after the sūrah of victory was reveal
أَلِظُّوا بِيَا ذَا الْجَلاَلِ وَالإِكْرَامِ
Two words to keep returning to
The Prophet ﷺ told them to hold fast to this one phrase.
الْمَلاَئِكَةُ تُصَلِّي عَلَى أَحَدِكُمْ مَا دَامَ فِي مُصَلاَّهُ الَّذِي صَلَّى فِيهِ، مَا …
While you are still sitting where you prayed
The angels keep asking for you as long as you stay in the place you pray
وَإِذْ يَرْفَعُ إِبْرَٰهِـۧمُ ٱلْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ ٱلْبَيْتِ وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلُ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ …
After you have done something for His sake
Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl ﷺ said this while actually building the Kaʿbah.

When prayer keeps slipping
Ibrāhīm ﷺ asked to be made someone who establishes prayer, not merely so

Two things named as sources of help
Not motivation or planning. These two.

Stated as a pair, and the second one is about money.

A list of what success is made of
It opens with a claim and then itemises it.
التَّحِيَّاتُ الْمُبَارَكَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا …
The words said sitting in every prayer
He taught it the way he taught a sūrah of the Qur'an.
ثُمَّ يَبْسُطُ يَدَيْهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى يَقُولُ مَنْ يُقْرِضُ غَيْرَ عَدُومٍ وَلاَ ظَلُومٍ
A call made every night while people sleep
Allah descends and asks a question, and it is phrased as a loan.

A warning aimed at a specific distraction

A message about where to pray
ʿUmar heard him describing what he had been told that night.
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، مَاذَا أُنْزِلَ مِنَ الْخَزَائِنِ وَمَاذَا أُنْزِلَ مِنَ الْفِتَنِ
Woken by something he had been shown
Umm Salama heard him get up in the night saying it.
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَقَالَنَا يَوْمَنَا هَذَا
On waking and finding you are still here
Ibn Masʿūd's companions heard him say it after fajr.
مَا شَأْنُكُمْ تُشِيرُونَ بِأَيْدِيكُمْ كَأَنَّهَا أَذْنَابُ خَيْلٍ شُمُسٍ إِذَا سَلَّمَ …
On fidgeting while giving salām
They were waving their hands and he stopped them.
فُضِّلْتُ عَلَى الأَنْبِيَاءِ بِسِتٍّ أُعْطِيتُ جَوَامِعَ الْكَلِمِ وَنُصِرْتُ بِالرُّعْبِ …
Given something no prophet before him had
Five things listed, and one of them removes an obstacle most people neve
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ، رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي
Aisha's account of what he repeated
She noticed he had begun saying it constantly in rukūʿ and sujūd.

What is said for you while you sit waiting for prayer
It continues as long as you stay in the place and do not break wuḍū.
اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ خَشَعَ لَكَ سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي …
Said as he went into the bow at night
A declaration rather than a request.
تَقُولُ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ، حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِنْهُنَّ …
Poor Companions worried the rich would outpace them
They came complaining that wealth bought extra worship.
إِنَّمَا الإِمَامُ لِيُؤْتَمَّ بِهِ فَلاَ تَخْتَلِفُوا عَلَيْهِ فَإِذَا كَبَّرَ فَكَبِّرُوا …
On not racing ahead of the person leading
The instruction is about staying behind him, not with him.
أَتَانِي اللَّيْلَةَ آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي وَهْوَ بِالْعَقِيقِ أَنْ صَلِّ فِي هَذَا الْوَادِي …
A command received in a valley
Delivered to him at night and passed straight on.
صَلاَةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ تَزِيدُ عَلَى صَلاَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَصَلاَتِهِ فِي سُوقِهِ …
What is being said while you wait in the mosque
Repeated over you as long as you stay in the place.
اللَّهُمَّ أُمِّي وَصَلاَتِي
A man who chose his prayer over his mother
She called three times while he was praying, and he did not answer.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ مَا لَكُمْ إِذَا نَابَكُمْ شَىْءٌ فِي صَلاَتِكُمْ أَخَذْتُمْ …
Walking away from an argument he could have won
Two men were disputing and he simply stopped talking about it.
أُعْطِيتُ خَمْسًا لَمْ يُعْطَهُنَّ أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي كَانَ كُلُّ نَبِيٍّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ …
Five things he was given that were not given before
One of them changed where prayer can happen.
اللَّهُمَّ أَعُوذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ وَبِمُعَافَاتِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ …
Seeking refuge in Him from Him
Aisha found him in prostration in the dark and heard this.

Said going down into prostration at night

The closest a person ever gets to his Lord
He named the exact position, then told them what to do with it.
رَبِّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
What he told Muadh to never stop saying
He held his hand first and told him he loved him.
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَارْحَمْنِي وَاجْبُرْنِي وَارْزُقْنِي وَارْفَعْنِي
Five things between two prostrations
Said in the night prayer, in the gap where most people say nothing.
سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْجَبَرُوتِ وَالْمَلَكُوتِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْعَظَمَةِ
What he said bowing on a night that would not end
He stopped at every verse of mercy and every verse of punishment.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْنِي مِنْ خَطَايَاىَ بِالثَّلْجِ وَالْمَاءِ وَالْبَرَدِ
Wash me with snow, water and hail
Three cold things, none of which anybody washes with.
هَلْ مِنْ سَائِلٍ يُعْطَى هَلْ مِنْ دَاعٍ يُسْتَجَابُ لَهُ هَلْ مِنْ مُسْتَغْفِرٍ يُغْفَرُ …
What He says in the last part of the night
Three questions, repeated until the sky lightens.
الإِمَامُ ضَامِنٌ وَالْمُؤَذِّنُ مُؤْتَمَنٌ اللَّهُمَّ أَرْشِدِ الأَئِمَّةَ وَاغْفِرْ …
A prayer for whoever leads and whoever calls
Both roles are named, with a different word for each.
سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ
What he said bowing, and how long he stayed there
Hudhayfah timed it against the standing.
لاَ تُقْبَلُ صَلاَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ إِذَا أَحْدَثَ حَتَّى يَتَوَضَّأَ

What he said the day they kept him from the prayer
The sun had gone down before he could pray it.
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ مَانِعَ لِمَا أَعْطَيْتَ، وَلاَ مُعْطِيَ لِمَا مَنَعْتَ، وَلاَ يَنْفَعُ ذَا …
