When you know it was your own doing

When you have overdone it and lost ground

When you have been looked down on

When you cannot manage everything you are meant to

Described as greatly hated in the sight of Allah.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ …
A command about the people in your house
Yourself first, then them.
بَلِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ
When you are making excuses to yourself
A verse about knowing perfectly well.
قَالَ رَجُلٌ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ حَسَنَةً قَطُّ لأَهْلِهِ إِذَا مَاتَ فَحَرِّقُوهُ ثُمَّ اذْرُوا …
The man who had never done a single good thing
He told his sons to burn him and scatter him so that Allah would never f
لَقَدْ ظَنَنْتُ يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ أَنْ لاَ يَسْأَلَنِي عَنْ هَذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَحَدٌ أَوَّلُ …
Who gets the intercession
Abū Hurayrah asked who the luckiest person would be, and got a plainer a
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لاَ يَنْجُسُ
When you feel too unclean to come near
Abū Hurayrah slipped away to wash rather than be seen in that state. He
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ
Forgiveness for the parts nobody saw
Aisha went looking for him at night and found him in prostration, saying
مَنْ رَأَى مِنْكُمْ مُنْكَرًا فَلْيُغَيِّرْهُ بِيَدِهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِلِسَانِهِ …
When you see something wrong happening
Three levels, in descending order of capacity.
اللَّهُ أَرْحَمُ بِعِبَادِهِ مِنْ هَذِهِ بِوَلَدِهَا
A comparison he made using a woman in front of him
Prisoners were brought in, and a woman among them was searching for her
مَنْ مَاتَ وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ
The one condition attached to entering
ʿUthmān narrated it, and it is as short as it sounds.
يَا فُلاَنُ بْنَ فُلاَنٍ، وَيَا فُلاَنُ بْنَ فُلاَنٍ، أَيَسُرُّكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ أَطَعْتُمُ …
Speaking to those who did not listen
After Badr he stood over the well where the bodies had been thrown.
وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا …
The instruction given to everyone at once
A verse that assumes everybody has something to turn back from.
لِّلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَإِن تُبْدُوا۟ مَا فِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ …
On the parts of yourself you keep back
A verse that covers the inside as well as the outside.
مَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِتَشْقَىٰٓ إِلَّا تَذْكِرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰ
The stated purpose of the revelation
Revealed early, when the weight of it was being felt.
وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ فِى ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِۦ ۚ هُوَ ٱجْتَبَىٰكُمْ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى …
On religion being made difficult
Stated as a fact about the design of it.
وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِّمَّن دَعَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَعَمِلَ صَـٰلِحًا وَقَالَ إِنَّنِى مِنَ …
A question about who speaks best
The answer is given in three parts.
وَقُل لِّعِبَادِى يَقُولُوا۟ ٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ يَنزَغُ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ …
A reason given for choosing your words
The verse explains what happens if you do not.
وَيَدْعُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ بِٱلشَّرِّ دُعَآءَهُۥ بِٱلْخَيْرِ ۖ وَكَانَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ عَجُولًا
When you ask for something in a bad moment

What to do immediately after a slip
Three instructions, given in order.
إِنَّ الْعَبْدَ لَيَتَكَلَّمُ بِالْكَلِمَةِ مِنْ رِضْوَانِ اللَّهِ لاَ يُلْقِي لَهَا بَالاً …
Guarding what leaves your mouth
A man can say something without weighing it and fall a long way.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَمِيلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ الْكِبْرُ بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ وَغَمْطُ النَّاسِ
Answering a man worried that liking nice things was pride
He asked because he liked his sandals to look good.
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ يَا أَبَا هِرٍّ إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لاَ يَنْجُسُ
A believer does not become impure
Abū Hurayrah slipped away and came back washed, and was asked where he h
اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَيْهِمْ بِسَبْعٍ كَسَبْعِ يُوسُفَ
Praying against people, and then relenting
He asked for a famine like the one in Yūsuf's time, and it came.
يَقُولُ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنَا عِنْدَ ظَنِّ عَبْدِي بِي وَأَنَا مَعَهُ حِينَ يَذْكُرُنِي …
A condition placed on your own expectation
The first clause of the same narration, taken on its own.

Naming names while praying, once

Said in prostration, covering every category
Four pairs, arranged so nothing can slip between them.
اللَّهُمَّ فَأَيُّمَا عَبْدٍ مُؤْمِنٍ سَبَبْتُهُ فَاجْعَلْ ذَلِكَ لَهُ قُرْبَةً إِلَيْكَ …
A safeguard he built into his own anger
He asked that anything harsh he said be converted.
وَمَثَلُ كَلِمَةٍ خَبِيثَةٍ كَشَجَرَةٍ خَبِيثَةٍ ٱجْتُثَّتْ مِن فَوْقِ ٱلْأَرْضِ مَا لَهَا مِن …
On speech that carries
Set directly against the good word in the same passage.
لاَ يَقُولَنَّ أَحَدُكُمُ اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي، اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي، إِنْ شِئْتَ …
Do not attach a condition to your request
A correction of a habit people fall into when they feel unworthy.
إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ وَإِنِّي اشْتَرَطْتُ عَلَى رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَىُّ عَبْدٍ مِنَ …
A safeguard he built into his own temper
He made an agreement with his Lord about anything he said in anger.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكَ مِمَّا صَنَعَ هَؤُلاَءِ ـ يَعْنِي أَصْحَابَهُ ـ …
Said before walking into something he expected not to return from
Anas ibn an-Naḍr had missed Badr and did not intend to miss the next one
أَوَمَا عَلِمْتِ مَا شَارَطْتُ عَلَيْهِ رَبِّي قُلْتُ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّمَا أَنَا بَشَرٌ فَأَىُّ …
A safeguard set for anyone he ever wronged
Aisha heard him make it after two men had spoken to him.
۞ قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ …
Addressed to those who went furthest
The address used for them is the tenderest in the Qur'an.

إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ شُفِّعْتُ، فَقُلْتُ يَا رَبِّ أَدْخِلِ الْجَنَّةَ مَنْ كَانَ …
What he will ask for at the intercession

He set it up so that his own anger could not harm anyone.

A woman freed a camel she had vowed to slaughter
She had escaped on it and vowed to kill it in thanks.
اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِأَبِي جَهْلِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ وَعُتْبَةَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ وَشَيْبَةَ بْنِ …
Naming an oppressor in prayer while he was praying
Filth had been placed on his back while he prostrated.
اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ الْمَلأَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ أَبَا جَهْلِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ، وَعُتْبَةَ بْنَ …
What was done to him while he prayed at the Kaʿbah
His daughter came and removed it from his back.
يَا أَبَا جَهْلِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ يَا أُمَيَّةَ بْنَ خَلَفٍ يَا عُتْبَةَ بْنَ رَبِيعَةَ يَا …
Speaking to the dead at the well of Badr
ʿUmar asked why he was addressing bodies.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
What to say if you find the Night
Aisha asked the practical question.
يَا رَبِّ مَا فَعَلْتُ إِلاَّ مِنْ مَخَافَتِكَ . فَغَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ
The man who asked to be scattered so he could not be found
He thought so badly of his own record that he tried to disappear.

Wash me with snow, water and hail
Three cold things, none of which anybody washes with.
فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ لَقَدْ عَمِلْتُ أَشْيَاءَ مَا أَرَاهَا هَا هُنَا
The last man out of the Fire, counting
They were told to ask about his small sins and hide the large ones.
إِنْ تَغْفِرِ اللَّهُمَّ تَغْفِرْ جَمَّا وَأَىُّ عَبْدٍ لَكَ لاَ أَلَمَّا

Ubadah on what he pledged, and the three outcomes
A list of prohibitions, and then what happens after each one.
