When you are studying or sitting an exam
The only thing Allah commands His Messenger ﷺ to ask for more of.
قَالَ رَبِّ ٱشْرَحْ لِى صَدْرِى وَيَسِّرْ لِىٓ أَمْرِى وَٱحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِى …
When you have to speak and you are afraid
Mūsā ﷺ asked for this before standing in front of Pharaoh.
۞ وَأَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلضُّرُّ وَأَنتَ أَرْحَمُ ٱلرَّٰحِمِينَ
When you have been unwell a long time
Ayyūb ﷺ lost his health, his wealth and his children, and said seven wor
وَلَمَّا بَرَزُوا۟ لِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِۦ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا …
Before something you are dreading
Said by a small army the moment they saw how large the other one was.
قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَآ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ ٱللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَىٰنَا ۚ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ …
When you are frightened of what might happen
What the believers are told to say about anything that could come.
وَقُل رَّبِّ أَدْخِلْنِى مُدْخَلَ صِدْقٍ وَأَخْرِجْنِى مُخْرَجَ صِدْقٍ وَٱجْعَل لِّى مِن …
Going into something new
Mūsā ﷺ was told to say this. So was the Prophet ﷺ, at the hijrah.
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِ قَلْبَهُ وَثَبِّتْ لِسَانَهُ
Before you have to speak or decide for others
Taught to ʿAlī when he was sent to judge between people and felt unready
فَسَتَذْكُرُونَ مَآ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ ۚ وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمْرِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ …
When you have decided and it is out of your hands
Said by a man who had just warned his people and knew what it would cost
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَقُولُوا۟ قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا يُصْلِحْ …
Before a conversation that matters
A command about speech, with a promise attached to it.
اللَّهُمَّ انْفَعْنِي بِمَا عَلَّمْتَنِي وَعَلِّمْنِي مَا يَنْفَعُنِي وَزِدْنِي عِلْمًا …
When learning is not changing you
Asked for the knowledge to be of use, not only to be acquired.
أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ عَمَلِكَ
Saying goodbye to someone leaving
The Prophet ﷺ would entrust three things about the traveller to Allah.
أُوصِيكَ يَا مُعَاذُ لاَ تَدَعَنَّ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ تَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى …
The one he ﷺ told Muʿādh never to leave
He took him by the hand, said he loved him, and told him not to drop thi
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ …
The one you already know
Seven verses, said at least seventeen times a day, and the only sūrah a

When you feel watched by no one

When something happens that you cannot make sense of

وَٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمَعَ …
When you have started but cannot see progress
The condition and the promise, in one verse.
أَحَسِبَ ٱلنَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوٓا۟ أَن يَقُولُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ وَلَقَدْ …
When faith has turned out to be harder than expected
A question put at the start of a sūrah.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمْ تَفَسَّحُوا۟ فِى ٱلْمَجَـٰلِسِ …
For anyone still studying
Two groups are named as being raised, and knowledge is one of them.
ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ …
The first words revealed
He was told to read, and said he could not.
وَمَآ أَصَـٰبَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُوا۟ عَن كَثِيرٍ
Reading a hardship without blaming yourself for all of it
A verse that names a cause, and another beside it that names pardon.
۞ ٱللَّهُ نُورُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ مَثَلُ نُورِهِۦ كَمِشْكَوٰةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ ۖ …

Why any of this was set up
The stated purpose of creating death and life, in that order.

The answer to who He is
They asked him ﷺ to describe his Lord's lineage. Four verses came down.
ثُمَّ آتِيهِ الرَّابِعَةَ - أَوْ أَعُودُ الرَّابِعَةَ - فَأَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ مَا بَقِيَ إِلاَّ …
Held back by what you carried
On the Day when people look for someone to intercede, one thing detains
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ …
The words called out five times a day
Taught word by word to Abū Maḥdhūrah, whose voice he ﷺ had liked.
إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ
Answering a greeting you are unsure about

The words said sitting in every prayer
He taught it the way he taught a sūrah of the Qur'an.

Good is a test as much as bad

Why any of it is attractive
The beauty of the world is described as deliberate, and as a test.
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَعْلَمَ ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَ مِنكُمْ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ وَنَبْلُوَا۟ …
Stated in the first person, plainly
Not if, but until.
فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ …
Two situations people misread
Being given much and being given little are both misinterpreted.
وَمَا يَسْتَوِى ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ وَٱلْبَصِيرُ وَلَا ٱلظُّلُمَـٰتُ وَلَا ٱلنُّورُ وَلَا ٱلظِّلُّ …
A comparison offered as a question
Four pairs, none of which are equal.
بَدَأَ الإِسْلاَمُ غَرِيبًا وَسَيَعُودُ كَمَا بَدَأَ غَرِيبًا فَطُوبَى لِلْغُرَبَاءِ
For anyone who feels out of place
A description of how it began and how it will end.
لاَ حَسَدَ إِلاَّ فِي اثْنَتَيْنِ، رَجُلٌ آتَاهُ اللَّهُ مَالاً فَسَلَّطَهُ عَلَى هَلَكَتِهِ …
Two cases where wanting what someone has is allowed
An exception carved out of a prohibition.
فُضِّلْتُ عَلَى الأَنْبِيَاءِ بِسِتٍّ أُعْطِيتُ جَوَامِعَ الْكَلِمِ وَنُصِرْتُ بِالرُّعْبِ …
Given something no prophet before him had
Five things listed, and one of them removes an obstacle most people neve

Told about a sūrah before leaving the mosque
He took him by the hand and nearly walked out before saying it.
يَعْلَمُ خَآئِنَةَ ٱلْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِى ٱلصُّدُورُ
On what is noticed even when hidden
A description of a knowledge that reaches the smallest gesture.
فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًا يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم …
Nūḥ's method, and what he promised would follow
Four consequences named for one practice.
لَوْ أَنزَلْنَا هَـٰذَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عَلَىٰ جَبَلٍ لَّرَأَيْتَهُۥ خَـٰشِعًا مُّتَصَدِّعًا …
What the Qur'an is said to do to a mountain
A comparison offered against a human heart.
ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ عَلَّمَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ عَلَّمَهُ ٱلْبَيَانَ
The opening claim of a sūrah
The verbs come before the nouns, deliberately.
أُعْطِيتُ خَمْسًا لَمْ يُعْطَهُنَّ أَحَدٌ قَبْلِي كَانَ كُلُّ نَبِيٍّ يُبْعَثُ إِلَى قَوْمِهِ …
Five things he was given that were not given before
One of them changed where prayer can happen.
وَٱتْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ نَبَأَ ٱلَّذِىٓ ءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَٱنسَلَخَ مِنْهَا فَأَتْبَعَهُ …
Do not be like the one who knew and forgot
A comparison with a dog, and it is deliberately unflattering.
فَتَعَـٰلَى ٱللَّهُ ٱلْمَلِكُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۗ وَلَا تَعْجَلْ بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن …
The only increase commanded to be asked for
Placed at the end of an instruction about not hurrying.
اللَّهُمَّ اشْهَدْ، فَلْيُبَلِّغِ الشَّاهِدُ الْغَائِبَ، فَرُبَّ مُبَلَّغٍ أَوْعَى مِنْ …
The instruction repeated at the farewell sermon
He asked them to carry it outward, not just hear it.
مُوسَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ ـ قَالَ ذَكَّرَ النَّاسَ يَوْمًا حَتَّى إِذَا …
Mūsā asking where to look
He was told the man he sought was at a junction.
قُولُوا اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ جَهَنَّمَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ …
Taught to children the way a sūrah is taught
Ibn ʿAbbās said he taught it to them exactly as he taught the Qur'an.
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ وَلاَ إِلَهَ غَيْرُكَ
Where refuge is sought four times over
ʿUmar recited it loudly enough that people learned it from him.
قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ ارْحَمْنِي وَارْزُقْنِي وَعَافِنِي وَاهْدِنِي
The man who could not memorise anything
He was given five phrases, then asked the honest follow-up.
اللَّهُمَّ عَلِّمْهُ الْحِكْمَةَ وَتَأْوِيلَ الْكِتَابِ
What he prayed while holding a boy against him
Ibn Abbas was still a child when it was said over him.
فَقَالَ فِيمَ يَخْتَصِمُ الْمَلأُ الأَعْلَى
A morning he was late for the dawn prayer
They almost saw the sun before he came out.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ كَانَ أَمْرُ الرَّاهِبِ أَحَبَّ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ أَمْرِ السَّاحِرِ فَاقْتُلْ …
The boy who tested which one was true
A beast was blocking the road and everyone had stopped.
أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الأَرْبَعِ مِنْ عِلْمٍ لاَ يَنْفَعُ وَمِنْ قَلْبٍ لاَ يَخْشَعُ وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ …
Four things that all fail in the same way
Each one is a thing that should work and does not.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلاً مُتَقَبَّلاً
Three things asked for in the morning
Each noun carries an adjective that does the work.
مَنْ يُرِدِ اللَّهُ بِهِ خَيْرًا يُفَقِّهْهُ فِي الدِّينِ، وَإِنَّمَا أَنَا قَاسِمٌ وَاللَّهُ …
The sign that Allah wants good for someone
He put himself in the sentence as the one who distributes.

How knowledge actually disappears
