When you cannot see the end of it
Revealed to comfort the Prophet ﷺ in his hardest years, with the promise
هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُۥ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبْ لِى مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ …
When you are hoping for a child
Zakariyyā ﷺ asked for this in old age, and was given Yaḥyā ﷺ.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ …
When you are told to be patient and it is hard
Where to actually find the strength for it.
يَـٰبَنِىَّ ٱذْهَبُوا۟ فَتَحَسَّسُوا۟ مِن يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ وَلَا تَا۟يْـَٔسُوا۟ مِن رَّوْحِ …
When you have almost given up
Yaʿqūb ﷺ said this after losing two sons and his eyesight, still refusin
قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ فِى …
When patience is costing you something
The only reward in the Qur'an given without measure.
وَلَمَّا بَرَزُوا۟ لِجَالُوتَ وَجُنُودِهِۦ قَالُوا۟ رَبَّنَآ أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا …
Before something you are dreading
Said by a small army the moment they saw how large the other one was.
وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ …
When you wonder whether it even reaches Him
Not a description of Allah. A command, and a promise attached to it.
رَبِّ ٱجْعَلْنِى مُقِيمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِى ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَآءِ
When prayer keeps slipping
Ibrāhīm ﷺ asked to be made someone who establishes prayer, not merely so
فَسَتَذْكُرُونَ مَآ أَقُولُ لَكُمْ ۚ وَأُفَوِّضُ أَمْرِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ …
When you have decided and it is out of your hands
Said by a man who had just warned his people and knew what it would cost
وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ
When you want it to last
Not a request for a good moment, but for a good ending to a long one.
قُلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالسَّدَادَ
For the road and for staying on it
Two things asked together, and the Prophet ﷺ explained each with a pictu
أُوصِيكَ يَا مُعَاذُ لاَ تَدَعَنَّ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ تَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى …
The one he ﷺ told Muʿādh never to leave
He took him by the hand, said he loved him, and told him not to drop thi
وَٱلَّذِينَ جَـٰهَدُوا۟ فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمَعَ …
When you have started but cannot see progress
The condition and the promise, in one verse.
رَبَّنَآ إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ ٱلنَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ …
When you will not get justice in this life
A statement about a day when everyone is brought together, said as a pra
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ وَذَكَرَ ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ
When you are trying to become someone else
Two short lines naming what actually succeeds.
وَلَا تَهِنُوا۟ وَلَا تَحْزَنُوا۟ وَأَنتُمُ ٱلْأَعْلَوْنَ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
When you are losing and it shows
Revealed after a battle that had gone badly.
لِيُنفِقْ ذُو سَعَةٍ مِّن سَعَتِهِۦ ۖ وَمَن قُدِرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُۥ فَلْيُنفِقْ مِمَّآ …
A promise with a timescale attached
The verse does not say when. It says after.
وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰ وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰ ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ …
When you are comparing your results to someone else's
What a person is credited with, stated plainly.
سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيْكُم بِمَا صَبَرْتُمْ ۚ فَنِعْمَ عُقْبَى ٱلدَّارِ
What is said to you afterwards
The greeting given at the gate, and the reason given with it.
وَجَآءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِيصِهِۦ بِدَمٍ كَذِبٍ ۚ قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًا ۖ …
Patience without complaint to people
Yaʿqūb ﷺ, shown a shirt and told a lie, chose two words.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوا۟ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ …
Two conditions, and what comes down afterwards
Say it, then hold to it. The angels do the rest.
خُذِ ٱلْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ
Three instructions for dealing with people
Said to be among the most comprehensive verses about character.
ٱتْلُ مَآ أُوحِىَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ ۖ إِنَّ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ تَنْهَىٰ …
What prayer is supposed to be doing
A claim about the effect of ṣalāh, stated as a fact.
وَلَمَن صَبَرَ وَغَفَرَ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمِنْ عَزْمِ ٱلْأُمُورِ
Two things that take real resolve
A short verse about what following an injury.
وَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا ۖ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ
When you are waiting on a decision that is not yours
Said to the Prophet ﷺ when things were at their most hostile.
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ
The single thing he was praised for by name
Of everything that could have been said about him ﷺ, this was said.
أَمَا إِنَّكُمْ سَتَرَوْنَ رَبَّكُمْ كَمَا تَرَوْنَ هَذَا، لاَ تُضَامُّونَ ـ أَوْ لاَ …
The two prayers that are hardest to keep
Whoever manages the one before sunrise and the one before sunset will no
مَا يَمْنَعُكَ أَنْ تَزُورَنَا أَكْثَرَ مِمَّا تَزُورُنَا فَنَزَلَتْ {وَمَا نَتَنَزَّلُ إِلاَّ …
On wishing someone came round more often
The Prophet ﷺ said it to Jibrīl, who had been away.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ الْعَيْشَ عَيْشُ الآخِرَةِ
Said while digging a trench with them
They were singing a line as they dug, and he answered it with his own.
لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا فَإِذَا طَلَعَتْ مِنْ …
A deadline nobody is told in advance
A description of the moment repentance stops being accepted.
وَٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلْخَـٰشِعِينَ …
Two things named as sources of help
Not motivation or planning. These two.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱصْبِرُوا۟ وَصَابِرُوا۟ وَرَابِطُوا۟ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ …
The last verse of a long sūrah
Four instructions, ending with the reason for all of them.

When you have been waiting a very long time

أَنَا فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ، لَيُرْفَعَنَّ إِلَىَّ رِجَالٌ مِنْكُمْ حَتَّى إِذَا …
A scene at the Basin that should unsettle you
He recognises them, calls for them, and is told what happened after he l
إِنَّ أَدْنَى أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ مَنْزِلَةً رَجُلٌ صَرَفَ اللَّهُ وَجْهَهُ عَنِ النَّارِ قِبَلَ …
The one with the least of it
A man who asks to be moved to the shade of a tree, and keeps asking.
إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِ، فَاكْلَفُوا مِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ
On going harder than you can sustain
They tried to copy a practice of his and he stopped them.
۞ لَّيْسَ ٱلْبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ قِبَلَ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ …
What righteousness is actually made of
A long verse that refuses to let it be about which direction you face.
وَقُلِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ فَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ …
When nobody is watching what you do
Three parties are named as seeing it.
وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ …
How the servants of the Merciful are described
The description begins with how they walk and how they answer.
وَمَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَمَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ
Two responses to being wronged
Named together as requiring the same resolve.
وَعَدَ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنكُمْ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْ …
When a community is under pressure
A promise made to people who were frightened at the time.
فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ وَعْدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقٌّ ۖ وَلَا يَسْتَخِفَّنَّكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُوقِنُونَ
Three instructions for holding on
The closing verse of a sūrah, addressed to the one waiting.
ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ طُوبَىٰ لَهُمْ وَحُسْنُ مَـَٔابٍ
A word given to those who believed and did well
A single word the commentators spent pages on.
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ قَالُوا۟ رَبُّنَا ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟ فَلَا خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا …
Saying it is the easy half
Two clauses, and the second is where the work is.
حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا ٱسْتَيْـَٔسَ ٱلرُّسُلُ وَظَنُّوٓا۟ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ كُذِبُوا۟ جَآءَهُمْ …
Rescue that comes at the very last point
A verse that admits the messengers themselves reached the end of it.
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ خَيْرَ إِلاَّ خَيْرُ الآخِرَهْ فَاغْفِرْ لِلأَنْصَارِ وَالْمُهَاجِرَهْ
Said while digging, hungry, in the cold
They were on the trench and had tied stones to their stomachs.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّٱلَّذِينَ هُم مُّحْسِنُونَ
A short clause about company
The closing words of a sūrah, after an instruction about patience.
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَعْلَمَ ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَ مِنكُمْ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ وَنَبْلُوَا۟ …
Stated in the first person, plainly
Not if, but until.
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ عَيْشَ إِلاَّ عَيْشُ الآخِرَة، فَأَصْلِحِ الأَنْصَارَ وَالْمُهَاجِرَة
Said while everyone around him was digging
Cold morning, empty stomachs, and a trench to finish.
مَا كَانَ لِأَهْلِ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ وَمَنْ حَوْلَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَعْرَابِ أَن يَتَخَلَّفُوا۟ عَن …
On effort that seems to have gone nowhere
A short guarantee attached to good work.
قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ فِى …
How the patient are paid
The only reward in the Qur'an given without a stated limit.
فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا
The word used is with, not after
Ibn ʿAbbās said one hardship will never overcome two eases.
لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ، إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ
Where strength is actually located
A redefinition offered in one sentence.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ خُذُوا مِنَ الأَعْمَالِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَمَلُّ …
Which deeds are most loved
Not the biggest ones.
أَنَا فَرَطُكُمْ عَلَى الْحَوْضِ وَلأُنَازِعَنَّ أَقْوَامًا ثُمَّ لأُغْلَبَنَّ عَلَيْهِمْ …
He argues for people and loses
A second narration of the scene at the Cistern, with him protesting twic
اكْتُبِ الشَّرْطَ بَيْنَنَا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ هَذَا مَا قَاضَى عَلَيْهِ …
Accepting terms that looked like a defeat
At Ḥudaybiyah they made him strike out his own titles from the document.
اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِقُرَيْشٍ، اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِقُرَيْشٍ، اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِقُرَيْشٍ
Naming names while praying, once
They had put filth on his back while he prayed at the Kaʿbah.
نَعَمْ لَكُمْ سِيمَا لَيْسَتْ لأَحَدٍ غَيْرِكُمْ تَرِدُونَ عَلَىَّ غُرًّا مُحَجَّلِينَ مِنْ …
A second warning about the same scene
He says they are his companions and is answered with one line.
فَٱسْتَقِمْ كَمَآ أُمِرْتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ …
Told to be upright, and it turned his hair grey
He said one sūrah had aged him, and named the verse in it.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا يَحِلُّ لَكُمْ أَن تَرِثُوا۟ ٱلنِّسَآءَ كَرْهًا ۖ …
Applied specifically to marriage
The same principle, given in a domestic setting.
وَلَا تَسْتَوِى ٱلْحَسَنَةُ وَلَا ٱلسَّيِّئَةُ ۚ ٱدْفَعْ بِٱلَّتِى هِىَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا …
Three instructions in five words
Said to be among the most complete verses on dealing with people.
إِنَّمَا الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى
Where patience actually counts
Said to a woman crying at a grave who did not recognise him.
صَلاَةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي الْجَمَاعَةِ تُضَعَّفُ عَلَى صَلاَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَفِي سُوقِهِ …
What is said for you while you sit waiting for prayer
It continues as long as you stay in the place and do not break wuḍū.
إِنِّي عَلَى الْحَوْضِ أَنْتَظِرُ مَنْ يَرِدُ عَلَىَّ مِنْكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ لَيُقْتَطَعَنَّ …
A protest made on the Day about people he knew
Aisha heard him describe himself waiting for them.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ …
The second command he was given
Short verses, and each one is an instruction.
صَلاَةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ تَزِيدُ عَلَى صَلاَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَصَلاَتِهِ فِي سُوقِهِ …
What is being said while you wait in the mosque
Repeated over you as long as you stay in the place.
اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِأَبِي جَهْلِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ وَعُتْبَةَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ وَشَيْبَةَ بْنِ …
Naming an oppressor in prayer while he was praying
Filth had been placed on his back while he prostrated.
اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ الْمَلأَ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ أَبَا جَهْلِ بْنَ هِشَامٍ، وَعُتْبَةَ بْنَ …
What was done to him while he prayed at the Kaʿbah
His daughter came and removed it from his back.
رَبِّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ
What he told Muadh to never stop saying
He held his hand first and told him he loved him.
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ عَضُدِي وَأَنْتَ نَصِيرِي وَبِكَ أُقَاتِلُ
What he said when he set out
Three short clauses, no request in any of them.
إِلاَّ الصَّوْمَ فَإِنَّهُ لِي وَأَنَا أَجْزِي بِهِ
The one deed Allah kept for Himself
Every other good deed has a stated multiplier.
فَأَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ مِنِّي وَمِنْ أُمَّتِي
What he will say at the Basin about people he recognises
Ibn Abi Mulaykah started praying against it out loud.
كُلُوا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ مِنْ حَوَالَيْهَا وَاعْفُوا رَأْسَهَا فَإِنَّ الْبَرَكَةَ تَأْتِيهَا …
Why he stopped a hand reaching for the middle
He took hold of the top of the dish himself.
وَمَنْ أَصَابَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا فَعُوقِبَ فِيهِ فَهُوَ طَهُورُهُ وَمَنْ سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ …
Ubadah on what he pledged, and the three outcomes
A list of prohibitions, and then what happens after each one.
اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِيهِمْ بِسَبْعٍ كَسَبْعِ يُوسُفَ
What he asked for when Quraysh would not stop
He asked for the exact famine an earlier prophet had lived through.
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمَا
What Umm Sulaym did before telling her husband
The child had died while his father was out.
رَبَّنَا إِنِّي أَسْكَنْتُ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي بِوَادٍ غَيْرِ ذِي زَرْعٍ
What Ibrahim said walking away from them
Hajar asked him a question three times and got no answer.
أَسْأَلُكَ وَأَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ بِنَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّ الرَّحْمَةِ إِنِّي تَوَجَّهْتُ …
What a man was told to say when he asked to see again
He was offered the option of being patient first.
لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ لاَ نَعْبُدُ إِلاَّ …
What Ibn az-Zubayr said after every prayer
He would say it out loud when the prayer ended.
ابْنَ آدَمَ إِنْ صَبَرْتَ وَاحْتَسَبْتَ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى لَمْ أَرْضَ لَكَ ثَوَابًا …
Where patience has to happen for it to count

Why he gave to the person he thought less of
Saʿd pressed him about it three times.
إِنَّ الدِّينَ يُسْرٌ، وَلَنْ يُشَادَّ الدِّينَ أَحَدٌ إِلاَّ غَلَبَهُ، فَسَدِّدُوا …
What he said about overdoing it
The warning is that the religion wins.
عَلَى رِسْلِكُمْ، أَبْشِرُوا إِنَّ مِنْ نِعْمَةِ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ …
What he said to people who had waited a long time
They had been sitting for the night prayer until nearly midnight.
مَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ فَلْيُكْرِمْ جَارَهُ، وَمَنْ كَانَ يُؤْمِنُ …
Three sentences with the same opening
The third one is about saying nothing.
مَا لِعَبْدِي الْمُؤْمِنِ عِنْدِي جَزَاءٌ، إِذَا قَبَضْتُ صَفِيَّهُ مِنْ أَهْلِ الدُّنْيَا …
What is set aside for one specific loss
