When you cannot see the end of it

Revealed to comfort the Prophet ﷺ in his hardest years, with the promise

Qur'anQur'an 94:5-6

هُنَالِكَ دَعَا زَكَرِيَّا رَبَّهُۥ ۖ قَالَ رَبِّ هَبْ لِى مِن لَّدُنكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً ۖ …

When you are hoping for a child

Zakariyyā ﷺ asked for this in old age, and was given Yaḥyā ﷺ.

Qur'anQur'an 3:38

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ بِٱلصَّبْرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ …

When you are told to be patient and it is hard

Before something you are dreading

Said by a small army the moment they saw how large the other one was.

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ٱدْعُونِىٓ أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ …

When you wonder whether it even reaches Him

Not a description of Allah. A command, and a promise attached to it.

رَبِّ ٱجْعَلْنِى مُقِيمَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَمِن ذُرِّيَّتِى ۚ رَبَّنَا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعَآءِ

The one with the least of it

A man who asks to be moved to the shade of a tree, and keeps asking.

إِنِّي أَبِيتُ يُطْعِمُنِي رَبِّي وَيَسْقِينِ، فَاكْلَفُوا مِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ

On going harder than you can sustain

They tried to copy a practice of his and he stopped them.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1966

۞ لَّيْسَ ٱلْبِرَّ أَن تُوَلُّوا۟ وُجُوهَكُمْ قِبَلَ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَلَـٰكِنَّ …

What righteousness is actually made of

A long verse that refuses to let it be about which direction you face.

Qur'anQur'an 2:177

وَقُلِ ٱعْمَلُوا۟ فَسَيَرَى ٱللَّهُ عَمَلَكُمْ وَرَسُولُهُۥ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۖ وَسَتُرَدُّونَ …

When nobody is watching what you do

Three parties are named as seeing it.

وَعِبَادُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلَّذِينَ يَمْشُونَ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ هَوْنًا وَإِذَا خَاطَبَهُمُ …

How the servants of the Merciful are described

The description begins with how they walk and how they answer.

وَمَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا۟ وَمَا يُلَقَّىٰهَآ إِلَّا ذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ

Two responses to being wronged

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ طُوبَىٰ لَهُمْ وَحُسْنُ مَـَٔابٍ

A word given to those who believed and did well

Saying it is the easy half

Rescue that comes at the very last point

A verse that admits the messengers themselves reached the end of it.

اللَّهُمَّ لاَ خَيْرَ إِلاَّ خَيْرُ الآخِرَهْ فَاغْفِرْ لِلأَنْصَارِ وَالْمُهَاجِرَهْ

Said while digging, hungry, in the cold

They were on the trench and had tied stones to their stomachs.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 428

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوا۟ وَّٱلَّذِينَ هُم مُّحْسِنُونَ

A short clause about company

The closing words of a sūrah, after an instruction about patience.

Qur'anQur'an 16:128

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ حَتَّىٰ نَعْلَمَ ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَ مِنكُمْ وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ وَنَبْلُوَا۟ …

On effort that seems to have gone nowhere

A short guarantee attached to good work.

How the patient are paid

Accepting terms that looked like a defeat

At Ḥudaybiyah they made him strike out his own titles from the document.

اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِقُرَيْشٍ، اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِقُرَيْشٍ، اللَّهُمَّ عَلَيْكَ بِقُرَيْشٍ

Naming names while praying, once

They had put filth on his back while he prayed at the Kaʿbah.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2934

نَعَمْ لَكُمْ سِيمَا لَيْسَتْ لأَحَدٍ غَيْرِكُمْ تَرِدُونَ عَلَىَّ غُرًّا مُحَجَّلِينَ مِنْ …

A second warning about the same scene

He says they are his companions and is answered with one line.

ṢaḥīḥṢaḥīḥ Muslim 582

فَٱسْتَقِمْ كَمَآ أُمِرْتَ وَمَن تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا۟ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ …

Told to be upright, and it turned his hair grey

He said one sūrah had aged him, and named the verse in it.

Qur'anQur'an 11:112

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا يَحِلُّ لَكُمْ أَن تَرِثُوا۟ ٱلنِّسَآءَ كَرْهًا ۖ …

Applied specifically to marriage

It continues as long as you stay in the place and do not break wuḍū.

إِنِّي عَلَى الْحَوْضِ أَنْتَظِرُ مَنْ يَرِدُ عَلَىَّ مِنْكُمْ فَوَاللَّهِ لَيُقْتَطَعَنَّ …

A protest made on the Day about people he knew

Aisha heard him describe himself waiting for them.

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ …

The second command he was given

Short verses, and each one is an instruction.

صَلاَةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ تَزِيدُ عَلَى صَلاَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَصَلاَتِهِ فِي سُوقِهِ …

What is being said while you wait in the mosque

Repeated over you as long as you stay in the place.

Naming an oppressor in prayer while he was praying

Filth had been placed on his back while he prostrated.
