Taught to Abū Bakr for inside the prayer
He asked the Prophet ﷺ for something to say in his ṣalāh. This was given
أَقُولُ اللَّهُمَّ بَاعِدْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ خَطَايَاىَ كَمَا بَاعَدْتَ بَيْنَ الْمَشْرِقِ …
Asked at the very start of the prayer
Abū Hurayrah noticed him ﷺ pausing before reciting, and asked what he wa
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي وَتُبْ عَلَىَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ
Said a hundred times in a single sitting
Ibn ʿUmar counted this from the Prophet ﷺ a hundred times before he left
وَمَن يَعْمَلْ سُوٓءًا أَوْ يَظْلِمْ نَفْسَهُۥ ثُمَّ يَسْتَغْفِرِ ٱللَّهَ يَجِدِ ٱللَّهَ …
After you have wronged someone or yourself
A door left open in the middle of a warning.
قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن تَزَكَّىٰ وَذَكَرَ ٱسْمَ رَبِّهِۦ فَصَلَّىٰ
When you are trying to become someone else
Two short lines naming what actually succeeds.
وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ طَرَفَىِ ٱلنَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِ …
After a bad day of your own making
Said to a man who had just confessed to something and expected the worst
وَمَآ أَصَـٰبَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُوا۟ عَن كَثِيرٍ
Reading a hardship without blaming yourself for all of it
A verse that names a cause, and another beside it that names pardon.
إِلَّا مَن تَابَ وَءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صَـٰلِحًا فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ ٱللَّهُ …

When you cannot manage everything you are meant to

أَفَرَءَيْتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَـٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلْمٍ وَخَتَمَ …
When you keep doing what you know you should not
A description of a specific kind of worship.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قُوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَأَهْلِيكُمْ نَارًا وَقُودُهَا ٱلنَّاسُ …
A command about the people in your house
Yourself first, then them.
بَلِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ
When you are making excuses to yourself
A verse about knowing perfectly well.
قَالَ رَجُلٌ لَمْ يَعْمَلْ حَسَنَةً قَطُّ لأَهْلِهِ إِذَا مَاتَ فَحَرِّقُوهُ ثُمَّ اذْرُوا …
The man who had never done a single good thing
He told his sons to burn him and scatter him so that Allah would never f
إِنِّي لأَعْلَمُ آخِرَ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ دُخُولاً الْجَنَّةَ وَآخِرَ أَهْلِ النَّارِ خُرُوجًا …
The last person admitted
He is shown his small sins, admits them, and then is shown what they bec
مَنْ سَبَّحَ اللَّهَ فِي دُبُرِ كُلِّ صَلاَةٍ ثَلاَثًا وَثَلاَثِينَ وَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ ثَلاَثًا …
Thirty-three, thirty-three, thirty-four
Said after every prescribed prayer, and the sins fall away though they w
سُبْحَانَكَ وَبِحَمْدِكَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ
What he said constantly near the end
Aisha noticed he had started repeating words she had not heard from him
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ لاَ يَنْجُسُ
When you feel too unclean to come near
Abū Hurayrah slipped away to wash rather than be seen in that state. He
رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ
Forgiveness for the parts nobody saw
Aisha went looking for him at night and found him in prostration, saying
مَنْ أُفْتِيَ بِفُتْيَا غَيْرَ ثَبَتٍ فَإِنَّمَا إِثْمُهُ عَلَى مَنْ أَفْتَاهُ
Before you tell someone what Islam says
The sin is assigned, and not to the person who asked.
مَنْ رَأَى مِنْكُمْ مُنْكَرًا فَلْيُغَيِّرْهُ بِيَدِهِ فَإِنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَبِلِسَانِهِ …
When you see something wrong happening
Three levels, in descending order of capacity.
لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى تَطْلُعَ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا فَإِذَا طَلَعَتْ مِنْ …
A deadline nobody is told in advance
A description of the moment repentance stops being accepted.
وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـٰرِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا …
The instruction given to everyone at once
A verse that assumes everybody has something to turn back from.
لِّلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ وَإِن تُبْدُوا۟ مَا فِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ …
On the parts of yourself you keep back
A verse that covers the inside as well as the outside.
أَنَّ رَجُلاً قَالَ وَاللَّهِ لاَ يَغْفِرُ اللَّهُ لِفُلاَنٍ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ …
A man who decided someone else was finished
He said Allah would not forgive so-and-so. He was answered directly.
مَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِتَشْقَىٰٓ إِلَّا تَذْكِرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰ
The stated purpose of the revelation
Revealed early, when the weight of it was being felt.
وَجَـٰهِدُوا۟ فِى ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِۦ ۚ هُوَ ٱجْتَبَىٰكُمْ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِى …
On religion being made difficult
Stated as a fact about the design of it.
أَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ مُعَافَاتَهُ وَمَغْفِرَتَهُ وَإِنَّ أُمَّتِي لاَ تُطِيقُ ذَلِكَ
What he asked for instead of what he was offered
Jibrīl brought him a choice about how the Qur'an would be recited.
يَخْرُجُ مِنَ النَّارِ أَرْبَعَةٌ فَيُعْرَضُونَ عَلَى اللَّهِ فَيَلْتَفِتُ أَحَدُهُمْ …
Asked by someone who has just been taken out of the Fire
Four are brought out, and one of them turns back to speak.
مَا مِنْ عَبْدٍ قَالَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ. ثُمَّ مَاتَ عَلَى ذَلِكَ، إِلاَّ دَخَلَ …
A condition that reads as very small
Abū Dharr kept asking, and the answer kept being the same.
وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى يَقْبَلُ ٱلتَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِۦ وَيَعْفُوا۟ عَنِ ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ وَيَعْلَمُ …
On being given another chance without asking
A short line of praise that names what has just happened to you.
سَابِقُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ مَغْفِرَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا كَعَرْضِ ٱلسَّمَآءِ …
What to compete over
The width of what is being offered is given as a measurement.
اتَّقِ اللَّهَ حَيْثُمَا كُنْتَ وَأَتْبِعِ السَّيِّئَةَ الْحَسَنَةَ تَمْحُهَا وَخَالِقِ …
What to do immediately after a slip
Three instructions, given in order.
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ خُذُوا مِنَ الأَعْمَالِ مَا تُطِيقُونَ، فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لاَ يَمَلُّ …
Which deeds are most loved
Not the biggest ones.
إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَمِيلٌ يُحِبُّ الْجَمَالَ الْكِبْرُ بَطَرُ الْحَقِّ وَغَمْطُ النَّاسِ
Answering a man worried that liking nice things was pride
He asked because he liked his sandals to look good.
اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي جَلِيسًا
Praying for someone to sit with
ʿAlqama arrived in a strange city, prayed two rakʿahs, and asked for thi
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي هَدَاكَ لِلْفِطْرَةِ
Choosing the plainer of two cups
On the night journey he was offered wine and milk, and took the milk.
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ، رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي
Aisha's account of what he repeated
She noticed he had begun saying it constantly in rukūʿ and sujūd.
سُبْحَانَكَ رَبَّنَا وَبِحَمْدِكَ، اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي
What he did once it was all over
After the conquest, and after the sūrah that announced it.
وَأَنِيبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ وَأَسْلِمُوا۟ لَهُۥ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ …
Turn back before it is taken out of your hands

A statement about the order of things

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي ذَنْبِي كُلَّهُ دِقَّهُ وَجِلَّهُ وَأَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ وَعَلاَنِيَتَهُ …
Said in prostration, covering every category
Four pairs, arranged so nothing can slip between them.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ ذَنْبَهُ وَأَدْخِلْهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ …
Praying for someone by their full name
Said for Abū Mūsā, and he asked to be present when it was said.
وَلَا تَقْرَبُوا۟ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَـٰحِشَةً وَسَآءَ سَبِيلًا
The wording avoids the act itself
It does not forbid the thing. It forbids getting close to it.
فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًا يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم …
Nūḥ's method, and what he promised would follow
Four consequences named for one practice.
أَتَانِي آتٍ مِنْ رَبِّي فَأَخْبَرَنِي ـ أَوْ قَالَ بَشَّرَنِي ـ أَنَّهُ مَنْ مَاتَ مِنْ …
Good news that a man wanted to run and tell everyone
Abū Dharr kept asking, and each time got the same qualification.
صَلاَةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي جَمَاعَةٍ تَزِيدُ عَلَى صَلاَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَصَلاَتِهِ فِي سُوقِهِ …
What is being said while you wait in the mosque
Repeated over you as long as you stay in the place.
۞ قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ …
Addressed to those who went furthest
The address used for them is the tenderest in the Qur'an.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ كَرِيمٌ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
What to say if you find the Night
Aisha asked the practical question.
يَا رَبِّ مَا فَعَلْتُ إِلاَّ مِنْ مَخَافَتِكَ . فَغَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَهُ
The man who asked to be scattered so he could not be found
He thought so badly of his own record that he tried to disappear.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْنِي مِنْ خَطَايَاىَ بِالثَّلْجِ وَالْمَاءِ وَالْبَرَدِ
Wash me with snow, water and hail
Three cold things, none of which anybody washes with.
هَلْ مِنْ سَائِلٍ يُعْطَى هَلْ مِنْ دَاعٍ يُسْتَجَابُ لَهُ هَلْ مِنْ مُسْتَغْفِرٍ يُغْفَرُ …
What He says in the last part of the night
Three questions, repeated until the sky lightens.
انْظُرُوا إِلَى عَبْدِي رَجَعَ رَغْبَةً فِيمَا عِنْدِي وَشَفَقَةً مِمَّا عِنْدِي
The man who ran, then turned around
Everyone around him had already fled.
فَيَقُولُ يَا رَبِّ لَقَدْ عَمِلْتُ أَشْيَاءَ مَا أَرَاهَا هَا هُنَا
The last man out of the Fire, counting
They were told to ask about his small sins and hide the large ones.
إِنْ تَغْفِرِ اللَّهُمَّ تَغْفِرْ جَمَّا وَأَىُّ عَبْدٍ لَكَ لاَ أَلَمَّا
Two lines he said about the verse on minor sins
The Arabic rhymes, which is unusual for him.
سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ
What seals a gathering
Said three times on standing up, and it works both ways.
رَبِّ لَمْ تَعِدْنِي هَذَا وَأَنَا أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لَمْ تَعِدْنِي هَذَا وَأَنَا فِيهِمْ
What he said weeping in prostration during the eclipse
He was holding Allah to something already written.
إِنِّي سَتَرْتُ عَلَيْكَ فِي الدُّنْيَا، فَأَنَا أَغْفِرُهَا لَكَ الْيَوْمَ
The private conversation on that Day
A man asked Ibn Umar what he had heard about it.
وَمَنْ أَصَابَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا فَعُوقِبَ فِيهِ فَهُوَ طَهُورُهُ وَمَنْ سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ …
Ubadah on what he pledged, and the three outcomes
A list of prohibitions, and then what happens after each one.
اللَّهُمَّ لاَ تُبَارِكْ فِيهِ وَلاَ فِي إِبِلِهِ
A man who gave the worst animal he had
And what happened when the words reached him.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ
What opens all eight gates
Said after washing, before anything else.
اللَّهُمَّ اغْسِلْ عَنِّي خَطَايَاىَ بِمَاءِ الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ، وَنَقِّ قَلْبِي مِنَ …
A long list, and then two images
Aisha reports it in one breath.
أَعَلِمَ عَبْدِي أَنَّ لَهُ رَبًّا يَغْفِرُ الذَّنْبَ وَيَأْخُذُ بِهِ غَفَرْتُ لِعَبْدِي
A man who sinned three times and was forgiven three times
The reason given each time is identical.
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Aisha noticed the frequency before she knew the reason.

A question he asked instead of a statement
He waited for them to answer it themselves.
اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى …
The one he called the chief way of asking
Said once at either end of the day, with a promise attached.
جَعَلَ اللَّهُ الرَّحْمَةَ مِائَةَ جُزْءٍ، فَأَمْسَكَ عِنْدَهُ تِسْعَةً وَتِسْعِينَ جُزْءًا …
How much of it is down here
The example given is a horse lifting its hoof.
لَوْ كَانَ لاِبْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لاَبْتَغَى ثَالِثًا، وَلاَ يَمْلأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ …
